 In the past many people could work for one job for their whole lives and retire comfortably as well as provide for their families all while enjoying health care benefits, paid vacation and seek leave and a nice life. However in the past twenty years things have changed drastically. Now many people work for many companies, often changing jobs every few years. Medical and health care benefits are being cut and in many cases may not even be provided at all. Paid leave for illnesses and vacations are also being cut and are not available for many workers. Even worse many people are laid off without notice and cannot find new employment in the field of work in which they have spent their lives. Part-time jobs are becoming all too common and are replacing many of the former full-time positions, which used to be plentiful for anyone who was hard-working and qualified for the position. 

As a result of the changes taking place in our society as well as trends in employment and increasing costs of living, home based-businesses of all kinds are taking the place of the traditional job for many people. Millions more are thinking about taking the home business plunge even if they have not yet taken the decision to get started.

According to the IDC Research Firm, close to 50% of all U.S. households have someone running at least a part-time home business. Furthermore 70% of home-based businesses are successful whereas only 29% of traditional businesses succeed. 53% of small businesses are home-based and every 11 seconds someone starts a home business.

With these statistics and the ongoing trends toward increased job losses, job insecurity, decreases in pay and losses of benefits, why doesn't everyone have a home business then?

 Although there may be other reasons, there are five major reasons why everyone is not already working from home:

1. They don't want to. Despite the benefits and the popularity of having a home business, some people just simply do not want to have a home business. Although I find this hard to believe and I'm sure that many of you will agree with me, that is the reality. Quite frankly there are some occupations that we need people to fill such as teachers, firemen, policemen, teachers, store clerks etc. What would happen if everyone decided to work from home?
   

2. They haven't found the right fit for them. Finding the right home business for you can be a challenge and this is one of the major reasons why many people are not working from home. They have the desire to do it and they are motivated to start a home business but they have yet to discover the right option for them. If they persist long-enough many of these people will eventually start working from home.
   

3. They lack the motivation needed to run a successful home business. Being your own boss is hard and although it's also rewarding, it is not for everyone. Some people simply work better when they have a boss to report to and to supervise them.
   

4. They think they do not have what it takes to work from home. Many people are able to start a home business and at for less money than they think but because of their lack of knowledge and skill set they are under the impression that it cannot be done. Some of them also are allowing their fear to hold them back. When approached in the right way and when given the right opportunity many of these people will also start working from home.
   

5. They have their own business but because of the type of business they have chosen, they cannot work from home although they are already their own boss. This last group are the people who belong to the smaller group of small business owners who do not work from home but yet are still business owners.
   

The most basic solution for those who want to start a home business and therefore, who fit into numbers 2, and 5 is to offer them the information they need to make an intelligent decision about the right home business for them.  This must be done in such a way that the person who is seeking the information feels that they are being offered the information they need and the help they need to succeed without being sold something. In other words they must be able to be free to investigate their choices without pressure.
